Fear can move public opinion away from the truth. People tend to avoid information that conflicts with their beliefs, causes tension or discomfort. We use selective exposure to safeguard our attitudes, beliefs, and social position.
In any social group there are beliefs you can profess. What is not talked about is relegated to another category. If you have an opinion that is contrary to the accepted belief, you’re a rebel. And that’s alright in Star Wars, but in real life people don’t want any trouble. They separate themselves from the source of turbulence.
