OPEN THE LIGHT

by Arthur Smid

A bow, a band of colors,
The sun and rain of flowers
With Mr. Bloom to help you,

We learn a letter until
The kiss of a crayon gives
Salt to air and children

Show us music and the wound,
The essence of compassion.
Everyone is who we are,
Asleep as you awake now
To write the kiss of colors.

A truth it lies revealed
Before my eyes describe
Who is Vishnu in Nahuatl.

As women give every birth
To see inside: mystery
Returns a kiss to give you

Love of knowledge before we
Contract a virus and crash
The car soldiering to war,
Asleep as I awake now
To write the kiss of colors.

Rainbows open up now,
Visions leading homeward,
Unfolding from our eyes.

It’s strange in the clearest way,
A kid colors all today
To create another one

I solve my problems to be
Open I ask the teacher.
She says the truth with crayons,
Asleep as we awake now
To write the kiss of colors.
